Tavern Names
Tavern names in the “The X & Y” tradition — the Prancing Pony school of worldbuilding, generated by the dozen for your map.
Optional: type a word that matters to you — half the batch will be built around it.
How to use this page
Generate two or three batches before judging — the first is rarely the best. Read the survivors aloud once; anything a tablemate cannot repeat back is out. For a bloodline or a warband, lock the custom word field to the same root syllable and generate per character: shared sounds read as shared blood, and the batch becomes a family tree.
The formula that works
Great tavern names pair two concrete nouns with warmth: “The Stumbling Stag”, “The Copper Kettle”, “The Drunken Griffin”. One half anchors (animal, object), the other leavens (stumble, brass, broken). The generator cycles the formula so a map gets variety without nonsense.
Name the tavern, then the rumor
A tavern name implies its story — every table asks about “The Broken Oath” before the door opens. Type the town’s trade or scandal into the custom field; generate names the locals would have opinions about.
Frequently asked questions
Should every tavern have “The”?
No — “Ye Olde” parodies aside, plain pairings (“Copper Kettle”) feel older without the article. The generator mixes both.
