Dwarf Names
Dwarf names that sound carved — hard stops, clustered consonants, and clan surnames with the weight of stone.
Optional: type a word that matters to you — half the batch will be built around it.
How to use this page
Generate two or three batches before judging — the first is rarely the best. Read the survivors aloud once; anything a tablemate cannot repeat back is out. For a bloodline or a warband, lock the custom word field to the same root syllable and generate per character: shared sounds read as shared blood, and the batch becomes a family tree.
Carved from consonants
Dwarvish compresses: “Bromdar”, “Thargrim”, “Durnakh”. Hard stops (b/d/g/t/k), r-heavy clusters, endings that land like a hammer. The pool refuses the flowing vowels that would make a dwarf sound elvish — the contrast between the two races is the point.
Clan names carry history
Dwarf surnames are institutions: “Ironfist”, “Stonebeard”, “Emberdelve”. Type the clan’s trade or mountain into the custom field — “forge”, “gold”, “deep” — and generate surnames that imply a homeland and a guild in two words.
Frequently asked questions
Do dwarf names need apostrophes?
Rarely — a name should be sayable at the table without a linguistics pause. The pool skips them by design.
