Fantasy City Names
City names that sound mapped — port towns, mountain holds and capitals, built from the morphemes real place-names use.
Optional: type a word that matters to you — half the batch will be built around it.
How to use this page
Generate two or three batches before judging — the first is rarely the best. Read the survivors aloud once; anything a tablemate cannot repeat back is out. For a bloodline or a warband, lock the custom word field to the same root syllable and generate per character: shared sounds read as shared blood, and the batch becomes a family tree.
Place-names follow terrain
Real cities encode geography: -burg (fort), -port (harbor), -ford (river crossing), -vale (valley). The generator composes from the same morphemes — “Ravensford”, “Duskhollow”, “Greyhaven” — so names sound discovered rather than invented.
Name the city, seed the culture
A capital named “Emberhold” implies forges and militarism; “Mistrelle” implies ports and fog. Type the city’s export or terrain into the custom field — “salt”, “iron”, “river” — and generate names that imply the map around them.
Frequently asked questions
How many city names does a campaign need?
Three to five named well beats thirty generated at once — name what the party will visit, seed the rest later.
